Lekha* comes from the tribal Banjara people group who live around Hyderabad. Her father died in the year of 2009 due to Dengue fever. Left alone, her mother was unable to feed her child and struggled to take care of her. She worked as a garbage picker for a while but couldn’t adequately provide for Lekha.
Her mother was especially worried because she couldn’t afford the school fees to ensure that her daughter continued her studies after her husband died. Through her neighbor she found out about Asha Jyothi and brought Lekha here.
Although initially lost and fearful she soon began to enjoy staying at the home and quickly began to excel in school.
This past year, Lekha was awarded the “Best student of the Year” award at school for her excellent performance both in academics as well as extracurricular activities.
